The Hairy Beast

Hi there! This is Baby---he (we think, maybe) is our little buddy. He actually adopted us toward
he end of last summer. We feed several raccoons each day at our backdoor. We live on a tidal creek
in a marshy area, so we are just a few steps away from wildlife. Baby came one day all alone when
he was really tiny. He was so cute, I just had to help him survive. I don't know what happened
to his mother & 3 brothers/or sisters.
Our yard has several large live oak trees, and a wild, natural area behind it. It was amazing to
watch Baby climb up & up & up until he disappeared by blending in with the tree. He'd also go much higher
than you'd think to look for anything but a bird.
He'd come to the sliding glass door about 9am for breakfast. We'd put out some dog food & water.
He was very trusting---you could even sit out there with him. He'd climb a tree after eating and
take a nap. At lunch time he'd be back & then maybe even a third visit for dinner.
At night the competition is pretty fierce among our raccoon population, so he didn't get much then.
One night we had 21 raccoons eating all at once----if you have a couple of mom's with 4 babies each,
it adds up quickly. At that point, we decided to re-think just how much dog food we were going through.
We still see Baby every day or two & feed him. I'm always glad to see he's still doing well.
He's not as little or as innocent as he once was, but he's still very cute.
(Yes, I did touch his fur once---but we both jumped. I was afraid he'd bite me, but I'm not
really sure what he was afraid of. I wanted to try brushing him, but never did it. I thought
it might remind him of his mother licking him...after all, he was so little & alone....)
Thanks to all the friends who stopped by the Beaches Museum to see me---I really enjoyed it.
Blessings!
