Shining The Dome of the Rock

GREETINGS!  It was back up into the 80’s this week--just what you expect of November in Florida, I guess.  I was entertaining my Cuz from Texas and she challenged me with a photo project.  I decided to share it with you.

Linda’s been doing a lot of globe trotting this year to India and Russia, Israel & Egypt before that.  She usually travels with her bff and takes lots of pix with her Nikon 5100.  It’s a great little DSLR camera without being heavy.  It  can shoot decent video, takes Nikon lenses, can shoot RAW files and has an attenuated viewfinder.  That’s awesome when you have to hold the camera up high or down low or around a corner to get a shot.  It’s like the ones that always come with video cameras.

Here’s the project:  turn a regular photo into a black & white with one area of color.  It's the Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, Israel.  That'll be quick & simple...I thought.  Normally, you just open the image in Photoshop or the Elements Editor.

Duplicate the layer over in the Layers palette on the right by clicking & dragging it down to the little square below.  Now you have two versions of the same image.  New layers automatically go on top of any previous layers.  Make sure you’re on that layer.  You can tell because it’s highlighted in blue.

Next go to Enhance>Convert to Black & White.  This is nice because you have built in preset options and sliders to tweak the image to your liking.  Photoshoppers get there via Mode>convert to grayscale or simply Desaturate.

You should have a color layer and a black & white layer over it.  You can simply choose the erase tool (8th from the bottom) on the left and erase through the black & white layer to reveal the part of the color layer you want to accent.  VOILA !  Quick. Simple. Impressive.

But...once I zoomed in onto the golden dome, there was an obvious door open into it with a ladder and the shadow of the ladder ruining the shot.  You might be able to clone a fix, but I chose to select a similar part of the metal roof with the marquis tool (4th down on the left) on the black & white layer.  There will be black & white “marching ants” around your selection.

Next under Edit>Copy Edit>Paste.  It will disappear.  But no, it’s made another layer in the layers palette.  Use the Move tool (1st one) to place it where you want it.  Then fine tune it
by erasing the hard edges at 80% or so.  Repeat as needed.  This image was tricky because it required some work in black & white and some on the color layer.  Not simple.  Not Quick.  Still Impressive.

PHOTOTIP: You can change how much of the color shows through by adjusting the opacity of the eraser.  Lower opacity = lower amounts of color.  You can create an old fashioned hand colored look by keeping the colors subtle.

BLESSINGS!
