Tips for Photographing a Baby

GREETINGS!  Hope you and yours are doing well.  Remember that those cards I listed last time come in handy for birthdays, anniversaries & invitations, too.

Babies, especially newborns make for some adorable pictures.  Perfect fodder to turn into that photo book later on this year.  For sweet sleeper pix, make sure your little one has recently been treated to a diaper change, clean clothes, a warm blankie and is nice an full of milk.

The best light is natural sunlight coming in from a window.  A flash often wakes or scares a baby.  You’ll want to plan your shots with the light.  Make sure background distractions are removed before you start. Your morning photo session should take place near the east windows, the afternoon session on the west side of the home or studio.  Screen porches or sun rooms are great in nice weather.

Make sure you have padding, like a comfy 4" thick foam on the floor.  Cover that with a favorite blanket or clean small rug.  (I have a small white bear rug that’s great with little ones.) Just make sure it’s not too long & shaggy.  You can place a favorite toy nearby or some tiny shoes.

Babies look best when showing their skin.  Take some sleeping shots by gently placing the baby on it’s tummy.  Get in tight in the face.  Gently place the little hand where you can see it near the head.  Zoom out a bit and take some shots from the waist up. If you’re brave, take off the diaper and go for a total nude---always cute with their legs curled underneath and the butt sticking up.  Include the whole body from above and the side. Try a few with the baby on his/her side or back.

You can create a collage with multiple shots of close up parts of the baby such as the ear, lips, fingers, hands, feet, toes and butt.  Don’t forget to get a shot of mom or dad’s hand holding the tiny hand of their baby.  Most of all, have fun.  No shoot is perfect.

PHOTOTIP:  Allow time to gently position the little one.  You will need to move around the baby.  Try adding hats, ribbons or hair clips for a little variety.  Use a beanbag chair, recliner or large table if you can’t get down to the floor.
